Child of Destiny

I was born the grandchild my grandmother always wanted
but she died before I was two.
I was born a complication in my parents' lives
that they never expected.
I was born a disappointment and a headache for my siblings
who had to mind me.
I spent half a century being what other people wanted
This next half century I'm going to be me.

I guess I required a lot more than some assembly
I required several re-writes and considerable reinvention.

I still do.
Maybe I always will
Who can tell

There's nobody who can tell you who and what you are
Except you
And sometimes not even you.
